MOURINHO MULLS APPEAL OPTIONS!

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has two days to respond to a misconduct charge from the Football Association as his problems this season show no sign of abating.

Mourinho was charged on Monday evening over his comments to the media following his side’s 3-1 defeat to Southampton in the Barclays Premier League at Stamford Bridge on Saturday which left them in the unaccustomed position of 16th in the table.

Mourinho had earlier on Monday received the backing of the club amid a drop in form which has seen his team go from champions to hovering just above the relegation zone in a matter of months.

What made it worse for Mourinho was Saturday’s defeat, a fourth in eight Premier League fixtures this season, came in front of owner Roman Abramovich.

To make matters worse for the under-pressure manager, he has also been charged by the FA over his comments about referee Robert Madley.

In a statement on Monday the FA said it had charged the Chelsea boss who was unhappy at the decision not to award a penalty when, with the scores at 1-1, forward Radamel Falcao was upended by Saints goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

The statement read: “Jose Mourinho has been charged for misconduct in relation to media comments he made following Chelsea’s game against Southampton on Saturday 3 October 2015.

“It is alleged his remarks constitute improper conduct in that they allege and/or imply bias on the part of a match official or match officials and/or bring the game into disrepute.

“He has until 6pm on Thursday 8 October 2015 to respond to the charge.”

Mourinho had said after the Southampton defeat: “When everything goes against you, you need these decisions. One thing teams are not afraid of is to make penalties against us because they make them all the time and the referees they never give.

“It is a big confidence they feel because they are not afraid to be aggressive in the box.

“I tell my players to be careful in the box. These opponents know that they don’t have to feel that pressure.”

Earlier on Monday Chelsea had expressed their confidence in Mourinho with a statement of their own on the official club website which read: “The club wants to make it clear that Jose continues to have our full support.

“As Jose has said himself, results have not been good enough and the team’s performances must improve.

“However, we believe that we have the right manager to turn this season around and that he has the squad with which to do it.”

CLASSICAL CHELSEA!

Chelsea captain John Terry hails Jose Mourinho masterclass after Manchester City win

Chelsea captain John Terry hailed a Jose Mourinho masterclass as the key to their 1-0 win over Premier League title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Branislav Ivanovic’s solitary strike means Mourinho’s side are now well and truly in the hunt for league honours, level with second-placed City and only two points behind Arsenal.

Mourinho’s methods may come in for criticism but he does know how to set up a team to get a result, something which Terry hailed following the victory for the Blues.

When asked if the result told the story of a Mourinho masterclass, Terry told Sky Sports 1: “Very much so. This is where he comes into his own.

“We spent a couple of days working on their strengths and weaknesses.

“After the disappointment of dropping two points against West Ham it was important to come here and bounce back.

“In the first 15 minutes they were very good and made it difficult. We showed a lot of character. Overall we were very sold and happy for the win.”

Terry also believes that Monday night’s victory over City - who failed to get on the score sheet tonight in a season that has so far seen them almost score at will - could give other teams confidence against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

“They’ve been phenomenal scoring goals and turning teams over,” Terry added.

“It was important not just for us but for other teams, showing that they can be beaten.”

Daily Mail reports that Arsene Wenger was upset that his side were denied a penalty after Willian appeared to trip Theo Walcott in the box, while Mikel Obi escaped a red card for catching Mikel Arteta’s ankle in a bruising clash.

Mourinho, who maintained his unbeaten record against the Gunners, blasted Arsenal.

“You know, they like to cry,” said the Chelsea boss. “That’s tradition. But I prefer to say, and I was telling it to the fourth official, that English people – Frank Lampard, for example – would never provoke a situation like that. Players from other countries, especially some countries, have that in their blood.

“If you have contact or the opponent was aggressive, let’s go, keep going, this is English football. Foreign players are bringing lots of good things. They come here because they are talented, but I prefer English blood in football.

“English blood in this situation is: ‘Come on, let’s go.’ The (Mikel) tackle is a hard and aggressive one. Football is for men or for women with fantastic attitude.

“It’s true, there are other sports without contact; fantastic sports which demand a lot from the players, and I respect those sports full of champions. But no contact. Football is a game of contact. English football, winter, water on the pitch, sliding tackles at fantastic speed. Be proud. Play with pride. If you’re hurt, OK, you’re hurt.”

But Wenger, when asked about referee Mike Dean’s display said, “Of course, I can understand that Mourinho thought he (the referee) had a good game. I don’t think he had a great game at all. I think it (Willian on Walcott) was a penalty. Honestly. If I’m wrong, I apologise.

“I have to watch the (Mikel) challenge again. On the pitch it looked bad, but the referee was in a good position. It’s Christmas so let’s give everyone his own opinion. I’ll have mine.”

On the Mikel tackle, Arteta told Sky Sports, “On that moment I think that he (Mikel) caught me high – I’ve got a big swollen ankle. I think that he got late on the ball. You ask me if it is intentional or not – I believe that is why the referee didn’t give him a red card.”

Arteta did admit that both players were committed to the challenge, but thinks that the way in which Mikel flew in was more dangerous than his attempt to win the ball.

“I was not facing him and he points his studs towards me. I think it is a different challenge. We were both going for the ball and that is what I am saying, I think probably the referee thought it was not intentional. I cannot judge what Obi was trying to do, I think he challenged the ball but sometimes you are late and if you are late with your studs up you know what happens.”

Sky Says: Chelsea assistant first-team coach Steve Holland says that manager Jose Mourinho was left frustrated with Cardiff's time-wasting tactics despite his side's 4-1 win.

The Blues boss was sent to the stands after voicing his anger midway through the second half of Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, having felt aggrieved that the visitors were taking too much time over their set-pieces with the scores level at 1-1.

An Eden Hazard double, plus goals from Samuel Eto'o and Oscar sealed the three points for Chelsea, although Holland says Mourinho was still unhappy with referee Anthony Taylor.

"Jose is really frustrated regarding one incident which reoccurred during the first hour of the game and that, quite clearly, from the first couple of minutes, it was taking longer and longer for Cardiff to take their goal kicks, free-kicks, corners," said Holland, standing in for Mourinho in his post-match interview.

"We didn't badger the fourth official; it was a point that was made on two or three occasions quite professionally. Was the referee going to do something about it? It was clearly having an effect on the game, the game was being stopped for long periods.

"The referee did say he was aware of it but nothing actually happened and it continued. I think it was 56 minutes before he finally made the point to the goalkeeper and gave him a yellow card he needed to speed up.
