CLASSICAL CHELSEA!

Chelsea captain John Terry hails Jose Mourinho masterclass after Manchester City win

Chelsea captain John Terry hailed a Jose Mourinho masterclass as the key to their 1-0 win over Premier League title rivals Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

Branislav Ivanovic’s solitary strike means Mourinho’s side are now well and truly in the hunt for league honours, level with second-placed City and only two points behind Arsenal.

Mourinho’s methods may come in for criticism but he does know how to set up a team to get a result, something which Terry hailed following the victory for the Blues.

When asked if the result told the story of a Mourinho masterclass, Terry told Sky Sports 1: “Very much so. This is where he comes into his own.

“We spent a couple of days working on their strengths and weaknesses.

“After the disappointment of dropping two points against West Ham it was important to come here and bounce back.

“In the first 15 minutes they were very good and made it difficult. We showed a lot of character. Overall we were very sold and happy for the win.”

Terry also believes that Monday night’s victory over City - who failed to get on the score sheet tonight in a season that has so far seen them almost score at will - could give other teams confidence against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

“They’ve been phenomenal scoring goals and turning teams over,” Terry added.

“It was important not just for us but for other teams, showing that they can be beaten.”

ETO'O TRUMPS MANCHESTER UNITED!

Samuel Eto’o bags a hat-trick as Chelsea thump Manchester United

Samuel Eto’o scored a hat-trick as Chelsea cruised past Manchester United to pile the pressure onto David Moyes and the Glazer familyand secure Jose Mourinho’s 100th Premier League victory.

It was the first hat-trick scored against the Red Devils by a Blues player since Seamus O’Connell in the 1954/55 season - the west Londoners lost that game 6-5 but it mattered not as they lifted their first league title that year.

The Cameroon international opened the scoring with a deflected shot that David De Gea was unable to stop.

The striker doubled the lead when he bundled the ball home on 45 minutes to give the Red Devils a mountain to climb going into half-time.

Red Devils fans protested against the Glazer family calling on them to sell the club.

Eto’o completed his treble three minutes after the break when he tapped home the rebound after Gary Cahill’s header was saved.

Javier Hernandez pulled a goal back with 13 minutes left but it was only a consolation as the Blues enjoyed a thumping win.

The frustration got to Manchester United players and Nemanja Vidic was sent off for a horrible tackle on Eden Hazard, while Rafael should also have been sent off for a horror lunge on Gary Cahill.

MOURINHO - FINAL WHISTLE VERDICT!

FINAL WHISTLE VERDICT: SQUAD REWARD

Jose Mourinho hailed the efforts of his whole squad over the busy festive period following this afternoon's 3-0 victory at Southampton.

An entertaining opening first 45 ended goalless in torrid weather conditions, though both sides had chances to score. Fernando Torres , Ramires and Eden Hazard all went close for the Blues, with the Spaniard in particular posing a serious threat to the Saints' backline. At the other end, Ashley Cole was on hand twice to block superbly from Adam Lallana.

Mourinho made two changes early in the second half, bringing on Willian and Oscar , and those substitutions proved decisive as we swept the Saints away. Torres had got the goal his performance deserved with a close-range header before the Brazilian duo of Willian and Oscar got in the act, the former's strike from outside the box certainly one to savour.

The manager confirmed after the game Branislav Ivanovic and Frank Lampard will be out until the end of the month, but this victory got the beginning of it off to a great start, and keeps us within touching distance of leaders Arsenal. Reflecting on the victory, our third in a row, Mourinho felt it was just rewards for a fine away showing.

'This period is difficult for everyone, and in our case it was very difficult because we played Arsenal, Liverpool and then Southampton away,' Mourinho said. 'We always had suspensions and injuries, so the squad was brilliant in the way they answered to our needs.'

'This match was perfect, but it was particularly difficult because you need to work a lot to play against Southampton. They play very good football, you have to be compact at the back and press the ball all the time.

'We started very well, we had some good chances but also some difficult moments when I saw my people defend the goal with everything they had. With Willian and Oscar the plan worked - sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. They came on for the last 35 minutes, as the fatigue on the pitch accumulated, and they gave a different intensity to the game. Of course it was up to their talent, and that, together with Eden, started creating a lot.

'After we scored we dominated even more and we finished the game in a comfortable way. I think we really deserved the victory.'

Mourinho was pleased another of his strikers had scored a crucial goal…
' I'm very happy with Fernando's performance. His goal completely changed the game because after that the game was in our hands. It was an important goal for him, and it was important that Samuel scored the winning goal against Liverpool too.

'If at the same time the team is improving and the young players are improving too, if at the same time the older players are showing stability in their performances and our strikers can score a few goals, that's good.'

Oscar was booked for simulation, having rounded Kelvin Davis, minutes after coming on…
'He deserved to get booked. It's strange because Oscar is a clean player, he was waiting for the keeper to come and smash him because that usually happens, but the keeper wasn't coming, he stopped. I accepted his explanation to me, Oscar found himself in a moment of contradiction in a fraction of a second. It's a fair yellow card for a clean player.'

Mourinho saw no issue with Juan Mata 's reaction when he was substituted…
'I think his frustration was because of the result because we knew we had to win. If we don't win this game the difference to the leaders is bigger. When he came off the team was losing two points, so I think his frustration was about that. At the end of the game everybody, including him, was happy in the dressing room and everybody was celebrating the victory.'

The transfer window opened today…
'The window is open and when it's open anything can happen but we don't think a lot is going to happen for us. If somebody really wants to leave probably we have to bring in somebody but we are going to do things in a very calm way.

'I know what I'm building and what we are building at the club. Next summer will be a moment to make a couple of clinical buys and improve our team in that direction. We work and improve and try to bring the young players to a different level, and we are doing that quite successfully. We are not candidates to win the league, but we are always candidates to win the next match.'

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino admitted the best side won…

' Oscar and Willian coming on completely changed the game. After we conceded the first goal Chelsea were much more relaxed and they became much more decisive and comfortable.

'Chelsea are one of the candidates to win the league, along with Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool and even Man United.'

ARSENAL ARE "CRY-CRY" BABIES - MOURINHO!!

Jose Mourinho

Jose Mourinho has branded Arsenal cry babies following an ill-tempered goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium on Monday.

Daily Mail reports that Arsene Wenger was upset that his side were denied a penalty after Willian appeared to trip Theo Walcott in the box, while Mikel Obi escaped a red card for catching Mikel Arteta’s ankle in a bruising clash.

Mourinho, who maintained his unbeaten record against the Gunners, blasted Arsenal.

“You know, they like to cry,” said the Chelsea boss. “That’s tradition. But I prefer to say, and I was telling it to the fourth official, that English people – Frank Lampard, for example – would never provoke a situation like that. Players from other countries, especially some countries, have that in their blood.

“If you have contact or the opponent was aggressive, let’s go, keep going, this is English football. Foreign players are bringing lots of good things. They come here because they are talented, but I prefer English blood in football.

“English blood in this situation is: ‘Come on, let’s go.’ The (Mikel) tackle is a hard and aggressive one. Football is for men or for women with fantastic attitude.

“It’s true, there are other sports without contact; fantastic sports which demand a lot from the players, and I respect those sports full of champions. But no contact. Football is a game of contact. English football, winter, water on the pitch, sliding tackles at fantastic speed. Be proud. Play with pride. If you’re hurt, OK, you’re hurt.”

But Wenger, when asked about referee Mike Dean’s display said, “Of course, I can understand that Mourinho thought he (the referee) had a good game. I don’t think he had a great game at all. I think it (Willian on Walcott) was a penalty. Honestly. If I’m wrong, I apologise.

“I have to watch the (Mikel) challenge again. On the pitch it looked bad, but the referee was in a good position. It’s Christmas so let’s give everyone his own opinion. I’ll have mine.”

On the Mikel tackle, Arteta told Sky Sports, “On that moment I think that he (Mikel) caught me high – I’ve got a big swollen ankle. I think that he got late on the ball. You ask me if it is intentional or not – I believe that is why the referee didn’t give him a red card.”

Arteta did admit that both players were committed to the challenge, but thinks that the way in which Mikel flew in was more dangerous than his attempt to win the ball.

“I was not facing him and he points his studs towards me. I think it is a different challenge. We were both going for the ball and that is what I am saying, I think probably the referee thought it was not intentional. I cannot judge what Obi was trying to do, I think he challenged the ball but sometimes you are late and if you are late with your studs up you know what happens.”

CHELSEA ON A DELICATE BALANCE - MOURINHO

Jose Mourinho has been speaking about the unpredictable nature of this season's Barclays Premier League ahead of tomorrow's game against Manchester City.

The Blues go into the game unbeaten in seven and having won four consecutive matches, the last of which coming with a 3-0 Champions League victory against Schalke in Gelsenkirchen.

Our 1-0 reverse at Everton last month, up to now, remains our only defeat in the Premier League, and with tomorrow's opponents having already lost twice - at Cardiff City and Aston Villa - the Portuguese believes there is no such thing as an easy game.

'Everybody knows they (Manchester City) lost a couple of games that normally they wouldn't, but that's football,' he said. 'We also lost against Everton, United lost against West Bromwich Albion and Tottenham lost against West Ham. Arsenal lost at home to Aston Villa so everybody's losing matches, some of them unexpected.

'Everybody's making it tougher; ourselves, Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool. City weren't just champions two years ago, they are a squad which is getting better and better and better with huge investment.

'This season, I think we can improve in relation to last season because last season Chelsea, in November and December, were completely far away from the title.

'Tottenham have had fantastic investment, Arsenal are the leaders now, Liverpool are playing one match a week which is a great advantage because it's one thing to play four competitions and another to play in two. The situation this season is hard.'

Having taking over from Roberto Mancini at Eastlands in the summer, it's been a mixed start to the Manuel Pellegrini reign, but while the two surprise defeats may have raised question marks about the consistency of his side, their 4-1 win over Manchester United was heralded in many quarters as the standout performance of the campaign thus far.

Having won away from home for the first time in the Premier League last weekend at Upton Park, they, like ourselves, approach the game in good form.

'They just won two matches away from home, against (CSKA) Moscow and West Ham, they are not easy to win and they won them,' said Mourinho.

'They have two very good teams, one playing and one in the stands. They have a fantastic squad and fantastic players so they are a good team, a really good team.'

The period between now and Christmas is as busy as it is important, with a host of matches being played across three different competitions, but the manager is simply focusing on one game at a time.

With so little to choose between the teams at the top of the table currently, the destination of the title come next May could hinge on a whole host of factors, as Mourinho explained.

'Everything and everybody,' he said. 'The medical department that recovers a player one week in advance, the board that gives great support and great stability, the supporters that travel away and support the team, the supporters that at home are very strong in the way they support, the manager that is more or less talented to help the team in some difficult moments and a little bit of luck because that plays a part.'

Sky Says: Chelsea assistant first-team coach Steve Holland says that manager Jose Mourinho was left frustrated with Cardiff's time-wasting tactics despite his side's 4-1 win.

The Blues boss was sent to the stands after voicing his anger midway through the second half of Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge, having felt aggrieved that the visitors were taking too much time over their set-pieces with the scores level at 1-1.

An Eden Hazard double, plus goals from Samuel Eto'o and Oscar sealed the three points for Chelsea, although Holland says Mourinho was still unhappy with referee Anthony Taylor.

"Jose is really frustrated regarding one incident which reoccurred during the first hour of the game and that, quite clearly, from the first couple of minutes, it was taking longer and longer for Cardiff to take their goal kicks, free-kicks, corners," said Holland, standing in for Mourinho in his post-match interview.

"We didn't badger the fourth official; it was a point that was made on two or three occasions quite professionally. Was the referee going to do something about it? It was clearly having an effect on the game, the game was being stopped for long periods.

"The referee did say he was aware of it but nothing actually happened and it continued. I think it was 56 minutes before he finally made the point to the goalkeeper and gave him a yellow card he needed to speed up.

Her son is one of the most talented and controversial, footballers in the country.
But John Terry's mother, Sue, didn't seem to be too used to the excesses of the WAG lifestyle as she joined daughter-in-law Toni for a girls' night out on the town last week.

The 55-year-old grandmother looked more than a little worse for wear as she staggered out of a nightclub in London's exclusive Mayfair district at 3am, and collapsed drunkenly in the back of a waiting taxi.
