The controversial Chairman of the Ogun State Labour Party, Simeon Olabode, and the party’s Secretary, Sunday Oginni, have been suspended for allegedly collecting N500, 000 to endorse the Peoples Democratic Party, Gboyega Isiaka.
The National Secretary of LP, Olukayode Ajulo, in a statement made available to journalists on Wednesday in Abeokuta, said the action, especially without knowledge of national headquarters, is illegal and went on to announce the suspension of the duo.
“The attention of the National leadership of Labour Party has been drawn to a purported endorsement of the governorship candidate of another political party by the Ogun State Executive Committee of the Labour Party. The National Secretariat of our great Party hereby refutes this purported endorsement,” the statement read.
“The party frowns at the illegality of endorsing the candidate of another party without the authority to do so. The acting Chairman and Secretary of the Party in Ogun State are hereby suspended till further notice,”the party national secretary declared.
“Comrade Calistus Okafor ( Deputy National Chairman) Alhaji Bashiru Apampa (Vice National Chairman) and others have, in the interim, been directed to oversee the affairs of our party in Ogun State, Mr. Ajulo said in the statement.
The party said all its candidates are viable and vibrant so can win the governorship and State of Assembly election in several states.
When contacted, the sacked Labour Party Secretary, Sunday Oginni, confirmed endorsing Mr. Isiaka, but denied collecting the sum of N500,000. He said the sum would be insulting considering his status.
Mr. Oginni said he endorsed Mr. Isiaka because he was the party’s preferred candidate before cross-carpeting to the PDP.
“Yes it is correct, we have endorsed Gboyega Isiaka, the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party”.
“N500,000 under my foot. It is even an insult. I am not as cheap as that. It is even supposed to be N500million. Let me tell you Gboyega Isiaka is more of Labour Party than PDP, and I want to say this, PDP stole him from us”.
Mr. Oginni described his suspension as fake. He said Mr. Ajulo was more a member of the PDP than the LP so signed “a fake suspension letter”.
