Nigerian football officials and fans who sold tickets to watch the Super Eagles clash with Argentina have claimed that buyers had paid in fake dollars. The match, which ended 3-2 in favour of the Argentines, was played on Thursday in Porto Alegre, Brazil with many Nigerian officials and fans selling their tickets to rival fans for between $400 and $1,200.
According to reports from Nigeria on Sunday, some of the complainants said they made the discovery later when they went to the market in Sao Paulo to do some shopping the following day.
“I was happy when an Argentine fan offered me $1,200 for a ticket, not knowing that I was paid in fake currencyâ€ a fan who pleaded anonymity complained to the Nigerian press.
A female fan, said she narrowly escaped police arrest after selling her ticket for $600 only to realise that the money was counterfeit.
She said she also lost the opportunity of watching the match.
Many of the fans were also arrested by the stadium security operatives for selling their tickets at the match venue which is against FIFA rules.
The President-General of the Nigeria Football Supporters Club, Dr Rafiu Oladipo, on Sunday described the attitude of the Nigerians fans who sold their ticket as pathetic and unpatriotic.
Oladipo said that it cost the club over $125,000 to purchase the tickets for the three group matches before the Brazilian Embassy in Nigeria issued visas to its members.
The Super Eagles are into the next round of the competition and play France on Monday.
