This award and your love and support encourage me to believe in my dreams and to go forward.’
Malala’s Biography:
Malala Yousafzai started her campaign for girls’ education at the age of ten when Swat was being attacked by terrorists and education was threatened. Using the pen name Gul Makai she wrote about life under the Taliban for BBC Urdu. Malala also volunteered to be featured in a New York Times documentary about education in Pakistan. She used every opportunity to speak publicly for peace and children’s right to an education.
In October 2012, Malala was targeted by the Taliban and shot as she was returning home from school. She survived and continues her campaign for education.
In recognition of her courage and advocacy, in 2011 Malala was nominated for the International Children's Peace Prize and won Pakistan's National Youth Peace Prize, which has since been named after her. She is the youngest person ever nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize and has received numerous other awards, including The International Children’s Peace Prize, The Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, and The Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award.
Malala now lives in Birmingham, England, and continues to champion universal access to education through the Malala Fund (malalafund.org), a nonprofit organization investing in community-led programs and supporting education advocates around the world.
