The Boston bombers made the greatest mistake of all time by their actions! The US immediate reaction showed intelligence par-excellence! Admirable, commendable and dependable. This is what is lacking in the fabric of Nigeria's Forces.  

This utterly brings to mind Radio Nigeria's rigmarole pun that "armed robber no be spirit o" interpreted to mean, that whatever you do, anywhere, anytime, wheretofore, wherever, whatsoever, per chance, per adventure, coincidentally, accidentally.deliberate or otherwise, there is always a witness, someone somewhere must have seen something, but in Nigeria, be it the problem of poverty or laikadaisical attitude, nobody cares, agunla everybody, wetin concern me, so the rot continues to decay.This summises the knotty riddle behind the onerous and continued embarrassing issue of the Gawat debacle. The man did not zoom into the skies! Its a knotty sudoku puzzle. Most unfortunate.

  

 WHERE popular broadcaster Rasaq Aremu Gawat? Since his disappearance a week ago, nothing has been heard of him.The presenter of E ji Sari, a programme aired during the Ramadan, was last seen leaving Ikeja, where he attended a meeting around 5pm last Tuesday.The Nation learnt that he disappeared about 11pm on Eko Bridge on the way to his way home.Efforts to trace him have so far failed.Speculations about his well-being have compounded his family’s dilemma. But Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, Ngozi Braide, dismissed the speculations.

 Mrs Braide told The Nation that Gawat is yet to be found.Gawat’s wife, Alhaja Fatimat has appealed for his release.Speaking with The Nation at their Adeniji Adele, Lagos Island home, Alhaja Gawat said the family is worried over his disappearance.

 The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has explained its role in the recovery of Gawat’s abandoned vehicle.LASTMA’s General Manager Mr Babatunde Edu said a black Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with number plate number  RE 77 AAA was discovered on the Eko Bridge inwards Apongbon around 11:45pm on Tuesday by LASTMA officials led by the Zonal head, Mr Akinpelu Ayuba during safety checks on the bridge.

 “On Wednesday, the base officer of the Zone Mrs Ganiat Ijaoba, while conducting routine checks on all impounded vehicles discovered through the side glass (as the doors were locked) that the passenger seat of the jeep had some religious stuffs such as Qurans, Islamic materials, documents and complementary cards that had Gawat Communications written on them. A distant relative of Gawat who is also an official of the agency and familiar with the vehicle contacted the family.

 “The LASTMA boss added that the presenter’s wife Mrs Fatimat Gawat and three other men appeared at the zone and were later joined by the Nigeria Police led by the Divisional Police Officer of Adeniji Central Police Station, Lagos Island, Lagos, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Monday Agbonnika, around 2pm on Wednesday. On their arrival, a spare key was brought out in the presence of LASTMA officials with an attempt to open the jeep, after several unsuccessful attempts. 

  According to Edu, the first son of the victim, Jubril Gawat invited a panel beater who forcefully opened the car doors in the presence of his mother, officials and relatives.“After the doors were opened, the younger Gawat entered the jeep to source for some documents which was observed to be missing together with his phone. 

 Several unsuccessful calls were made to the victim’s phone while at the zone. Eminent Nigerians and Islamic clerics have continued to throng his house to sympathise with his wife.Among the clerics were Chief Missioner, Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria Sheikh AbdurRahman Ahmad; Mufti, Conference of Islamic Organisations (CIO) Sheikh Dhikrullahi Shafi’I; National Missioner, Fatiu Quareeb Society of Nigeria Sheikh Sulayman Adangba; Ustadh Jamiu Trimidhi; Sheikh Imran Eleha and Amir (President), Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) Lagos State Area Unit Alhaji Qazim Badrudeen.The scholars prayed for his safety.According to Sheikh Ahmad, “this is a trial from Allah. We must be patience.”

BABA SUWE FAINTS ON PYRRHIC VICTORY!

It is no laughing matter for Nigeria's topmost comedian and likeable artist as Nigeria's Court of Appeal over ruled the High Court and upturned the judgement against Baba Suwe's N25M fabled largesse! The court says the award is baseless, ultra vires the High Court's jurisdiction and the detention, justified in the performance of NDLEA's onerous duties. 

That the matter should have been filed at the Federal High Court not Lagos High Court! We call that legal blunder!! Justice Pemu said it was only the Federal High Court that has the right to adjudicate on the matter more especially when it is a drug-related matter, adding that the NDLEA has the prerogative to keep the respondent in custody, while investigation was being carried out.

Now Babatunde Omidina, Suwelomo, Adimeru, Atuwe of Nigeria, will now have to resort to personal fundraising to offset frightening legal and allied costs associated with the suit. The Lawyers may dare the lion though by proceeding to the apex court, the Supreme Court for final determination of the matter.


This scenario seems to be a perfect meaning of a pyrrhic victory as his fabled N25M damages against NDLEA seems to have turned into a bigger colossal loss for him.

It will be a good one for legal jurisprudence and the rule of law in Nigeria if the matter proceeds to the Supreme Court of Nigeria for final determination. But for now, the chickens seem to have come to roost for the fabled comedian.

The Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, Friday, set aside the judgment of Justice Yetunde Idowu of an Ikeja High Court, which awarded N25 million compensation to comic actor, Babatunde Omidina, aka Baba Suwe, after he was detained by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for allegedly carrying narcotic substances in 2011.
The appellate court in its judgment delivered by Justice Rita Pemu described the N25 million compensation as baseless and pervasive and held that the lower court lacked the jurisdiction to preside over the fundamental human rights suit filed by Baba Suwe’s lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, in October 24, 2011.
Justice Pemu said it was only the Federal High Court that has the right to adjudicate on the matter more especially when it is a drug-related matter, adding that the NDLEA has the prerogative to keep the respondent in custody, while investigation was being carried out.
According to the judge, the NDLEA had good reasons to detain the comedian, adding that the N25 million compensation was uncalled for.
"The constitution stipulates the right to personal liberty. The result of the scan carried out on the respondent were in consonance with the appellant's suspicion.
"The appellant took note of the respondent's rights and that was why it applied for an extension of time to keep the respondent in custody which the Federal High Court presided over by retired Justice Okeke rightly granted.
The detention of the respondent is therefore not unreasonable," Justice Pemu held.
Justice Yetunde Idowu of an Ikeja High Court, Lagos in her judgment delivered on November 24, 2011, had ordered the agency to pay Baba Suwe N25 million for detention on suspicion of drug ingestion, as well as mandated the NDLEA to tender public apology to the actor through two national newspapers.
Baba Suwe was arrested by the NDLEA operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on October 12, 2011, on his way to Paris, France and was detained by the agency initially for three days during which period he defecated but no drug was found in his faeces.
The NDLEA, through its Director of Prosecution and Legal services, Mr. Femi Oloruntoba had earlier applied to the court for an order of Stay of Execution on her judgment delivered on November 24, 2011 pending the determination of the Appeal filed by the agency on December 6, 2011 against the judgment.
The agency, while moving the application before the court, then argued that the agency will be prevented from performing its statutory functions as well prosecute the appeal if it is made to pay the judgment sum of N25 million as it is half of its monthly available resources.
Oloruntoba contended that keeping Omidina in custody between October 12 and 21, 2011, on the suspicion of drug ingestion, did not violate his rights.
Reacting to the judgment, Baba Suwe's counsel, Bamide Aturu dismissed the NDLEA's appeal, even as he insisted that the exhibits relied on by the agency were legally worthless.
Aturu said the NDLEA misapplied Section 35(1)(c) of the constitution, adding that  the law did not empower the agency to keep Omidina or any other Nigerian citizen in custody indefinitely based on a "mere reasonable suspicion" of having committed a crime.
"The appellant seems to be confused over Section 35(1)(c) of the Constitution. They relied on mere reasonable suspicion. You cannot hold somebody indefinitely without charging the person to court," Aturu added

From what a source said, Omawumi was handsomely settled to keep the name of her baby's father a top secret. The reason is that the man is a sitting governor in one of the oil rich South South states and his wife is said to be very brutal; she "deals with ladies" who come close to her husband. 

It was gathered that Omawumi's child has the looks of the said governor and this is why she hardly go out with the child. The governor has big eye balls, he is dark and not tall. The source said the First Lady, that is the governor's wife, is already aware that husband had fathered a child with Omawumi. I hear she's mad at the development and has sent strong warning to Omawumi to "completely stay away" from her husband otherwise she will be sorry. As a result, about two years since Omawumi gave birth she has not stepped her legs in the state as she's closely being watched.
