Yaya Toure has been named the 2013 African Footballer of the Year at the Glo CAF Awards in Lagos, Nigeria.

This is the third time in succession that the Ivory Coast midfielder has been installed the best player on the continent.

The 30-year-old has equaled the record set by Abedi Pele and Samuel Eto'o with a hat-trick of wins.

Ghanaian Abedi Pele won three in a row between 1991-93 while Cameroonian Eto'o took the award from 2003-05. Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel was the runner-up, with Ivory Coast and Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba third.

“I am very proud and very happy to receive this award, but would also like to congratulate my brothers, John Obi Mikel and Didier Drogba,” the Manchester City and Ivory Coast midfielder said upon receiving the award for the third time.

Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has been charged by the Football Association over an alleged gesture made during the defeat at Manchester City.

Television cameras picked up Wilshere raising his middle finger in the direction of home supporters at The Etihad during the second half of the Gunners' 6-3 defeat on Saturday.

Wilshere has until 6pm on Wednesday to respond to the charge.

It is understood the FA took its time to gather evidence to understand the context of the situation having received the observations of referee Martin Atkinson and his officials on Monday, and have now decided there is a case to answer.

A statement from the FA read: "Arsenal midfield player Jack Wilshere has been charged by the FA with making an offensive and/or insulting and/or abusive gesture.

"The charge follows an alleged gesture made during the fixture between Manchester City and Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday 14 December. The incident was not seen by match officials, but was caught on video.

"Wilshere has been charged retrospectively by the FA under a new pilot project for potential 'not seen' incidents in Premier League matches.

"Under the new process, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials, a three-man panel will be asked by the FA to review it and advise what, if any action, they believe the match referee should have taken had it been witnessed at the time.

"For an FA charge to follow, all three panel members must agree it is a sending-off offence. In this instance, the panel were unanimous.

"Wilshere has until 6pm on 18 December to respond to the charge."

Such sanctions have been implemented in the past as was the case with Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, who was suspended for one match, fined £20,000 and warned as to his future conduct after he made a gesture to home fans as he walked off the pitch following a 1-0 defeat at Fulham in December 2011.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger admitted in his post-match press conference that the club would accept any ban handed out "if he did it".

If that is the case, then Wilshere is likely to miss the visit of Chelsea to the Emirates Stadium next Monday.

Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has stated that teenager Kelechi Iheanacho is travelling to England to finalise a move.

Reports in Africa and England claim that Manchester City are set to tie up a deal for the 17-year-old, who was recently named the star player at the Under-17 World Cup, which Nigeria won.

Iheanacho has been training with Nigeria's senior squad as they prepare for the African Nations Championship to be played early next year which is predominately for players playing in Africa.

Iheanacho has been linked with a host of Europe's top clubs, but it is claimed that he is destined for City.

"Initially a young man came declaring that he was the agent of Iheanacho, but I declined to deal with him until I heard from the family because the boy is still a minor," Keshi is quoted by the Nigerian Guardian.

"It was soon after my rejection that I got a call from his father who told me that they have got a travelling visa to the United Kingdom and that I should oblige him with his son's release.

"I did and told the young man to go and do the nation proud at whichever club he finally chooses to settle down with.

"We have to be cautious not to push the players too hard so that nobody will break down."
