Seems like Nigerians are beginning to become more open with the gay issues. Bisi Alimi the first Nigerian man to openly declare he was gay on TV was on CNN to talk about his experience and the Nigerian anti-gay law..Excerpts below

In 2004, Bisi Alimi did an extraordinary thing.He went on national television and told his fellow Nigerians that he was gay.

“There were so many things we don’t talk about,” Alimi told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour on Thursday. “My career was on the line, I was going to be outed by the media.”

It was better, he decided, to come out of the closet on his own terms……

“I have a responsibility to stand up for the community, to give a face to the community, to demystify the old arguments that there are no homosexuals in Nigeria,” People were not ready to educate themselves. And this created a lot of problems for the LGBT community in Nigeria.”I couldn’t get a job, I left university, nobody was going to employ me, my life was constantly in danger, I was always beaten, arrested by the police, discharged.Parliament passed the bill last year, so why did the president sign it now?

“He has been boxed to a corner,” Alimi said, who believes President Jonathan is increasingly politically alienated.

I know, like so many other Nigerians know, that this is a distraction.As for those fellow countrymen, Alimi believes that for many, their intolerant views are bolstered by religion.How many Nigerians know…what this law means? Or how many Nigerians have an understanding outside of religion what exactly we talk about when we talk about sexuality?”“Why then should religion be the basis of putting a law in place in a secular state?”

He would eventually seek asylum in the UK, where he now lives.He became the first Nigerian to declare his homosexuality on television.In that same year, 2004, Alimi had been diagnosed with HIV. He had been working for years as an activist with the gay community in Nigeria, and was programing director for an HIV-advocacy group.

In the last few days, more than 30 people have been arrested, with an increasing number coming from the west African country's Christian southern states. Until Goodluck Jonathan signed the law more than a week ago, prosecution of gay people had largely been centred on the predominantly Muslim north, where gays have long been punished under Shariah law.

"The arrests are all over. It's no longer just in the north,'' said Ifeanyi Kelly Orazulike, executive director of the Nigeria-based International Center for Advocacy on Right to Health. "Police are not telling us what the charges are, and people are scared.''

He said that at this point, some of those arrested may have been released, but not without being forced to give names of others who may eventually be implicated.

Nigeria's more than 160 million people are almost equally divided between the north and mainly Christian south, with a widespread condemnation of homosexuality throughout the country. Gay people can get lynched and beaten to death, or legally executed by stoning for the offence under the Islamic Shariah law that prevails in nine of its 36 states.

Sodomy was already illegal, but the bill signed into law Jan. 7 bans all gay associations and gay marriage, with penalties of up to 14 years' imprisonment for marriage. Arrests had been made before, but not at this magnitude, Orazulike said.

"It's obviously the law,'' he said. "People want to leave and you don't blame them. They are asking us about the exit choices.''

The law has clearly upset many Western observers. On Monday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States was “deeply concerned” by a law that “dangerously restricts freedom of assembly, association, and expression for all Nigerians.” The U.K. and some other governments in Western Europe have previously threatened to pull aid to countries that pass laws persecuting homosexuals, something that has scared other African countries, such as Uganda, into stalling their own legislation.

In the face of this pressure, why would Nigeria’s government enact such an anti-gay law? Sodomy was already outlawed in the country, and it’s unlikely that many homosexuals were publicly calling for same-sex marriage, so why bother?

The answer is depressingly simple: It’s an incredibly popular opinion, and oil-rich Nigeria doesn’t need Western aid in the same way other African nations do.

Last year, polls released by Nigerian polling group NOI found 92% of Nigerians supported the proposed Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act. Just 1% of those polled strongly opposed the law. Another survey from Pew Research last year found 98% of Nigerians didn’t think homosexuality should be accepted by society — the highest percentage of any country surveyed. These numbers are truly exceptional. Even in Russia, a country that became notorious for its anti-gay laws last year, approval ratings above 90% would be extraordinary.

That incredible support helps explain the political motivations at work here. President Jonathan is expected to seek re-election in 2015, and while Western condemnation may sting, threats of retribution aren’t as scary as they are for aid-reliant countries such as Uganda. Nigeria is one of the top crude suppliers to the U.S.

Nigeria had a rocky 2o13, with terrorist organisation Boko Haram killing more than a thousand people between May and December in a violent bid to create a separate Islamist state in the country’s Muslim-majority North. Jonathan’s support of the Same Sex Marriage Prohibition Act can not only act as a distraction from this, but also allow Jonathan to act — much like Russia’s Vladimir Putin — as a stalwart opponent of decadent Western moral values. Frankly, he’s not alone; the leaders of other African countries like Uganda, Senegal, and Gambia are among those who have spoken out about homosexuality, and Indiarecently re-joined the long list of countries where homosexuality was a crime.

If Jonathan is the winner here, then it’s clear who the losers are — Nigeria’s gays. Even though the atmosphere for homosexuals was probably already toxic, these new laws are only likely to drive them further underground. Dozens of men havealready been arrested under the law in the country’s north, according to the Associated Press.

Benue State in Nigeria seems to be the best in the opposites. Outstanding as the the State with the highest rate of HIV prevalence in Nigeria. As Benue state continues to grapple with the rising figures of HIV/AIDS in the state, Executive Secretary of the Benue State Agency for the Control of Aids (BENSACA), Mrs. Grace Wende has revealed that the agency recently discovered a 400-member homosexuals club existing in Makurdi the Benue state capital.

She said the organisation otherwise known as Men Sleeping with Men, MSM, has a large membership of male students from higher institutions in the state.

Wende who made this disclosure yesterday at a one day Training of Media Practioners on HIV/AIDS in Makurdi, said the existence of the gay club in the state was not helping the state government’s efforts at curbing the spread of the HIV virus in the state.

According to her, “the club was discovered during an Epidermic appraisal carried out by our Canadian partners in colloboration with BENSACA following the state government’s resolve to fight the increasing trend of HIV/AIDs in the state as shown in 2011 survey.

”In fact my office is already interacting with the group of young men who are mostly undergraduates in various higher institution of learning located in the state.” She stressed that the idea of identifying with the MSM which usually holds their meetings in December in Makurdi was meant to reduce the spread of HIV virus commonly found among them.

Mrs Wende further urged all stakeholders to join the fight against the virus in the state, stressing, “there is a heightened need for scale-up of effective and efficient HIV prevention efforts in the state if we must all win this war against the virus.”
