EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS: : GOV AMAECHI PACESETTING MONORAIL PROJECT.

Indications have emerged that the ongoing monorail construction in Rivers State will be launched in October as proposed by the state government as the project appears to have entered its final stage of rail installment on the track.

The monorail project had become a subject of political controversy in the state as many of the opposition to Governor Rotimi Amaechi had dismissed it as a wasted effort and resources because it was not going to fly, especially given the slow pace of work on site.

But Amaechi had continued to dismiss any such misgiving, saying even if that was the last thing he would do before leaving office on May 29, next year, he would make sure it is realised.

Reiterating this commitment recently, Amaechi told journalists in Port Hacourt, the state capital, that the “Monorail would be completed. The reason the monorail must be completed at all costs is political. I want to ride in the monorail and call the Amaechi haters to come and see that I am riding on the monorail.

“Even if it is May 29, 2015, people will ride on the monorail. We would hang the rail. What is delaying the monorail is just the terminal where they would maintain it. That is what they are fixing now, once they fix that, it will be ready,” he explained.

However, walking his talk, it was noticed at the weekend that the contractor had started to hang the rail on the tracks, a move that might have confirmed the fact that the first phase of the project would be completed before the Amaechi administration leaves office next year.

“I personally believe the governor means business as far as the project is concerned. And if you check, he has always said it; that he would not leave the project abandoned. That means it is a done deal. Now, we can confirm this because we can see the rail being put on track. That is commendable and we hope to ride on it soon,” said a resident of old GRA, Port Harcourt.

WIKE IS AN ILLITERATE - SAYS AMAECHI

Nigeria’s Education Minister Can’t Speak Good English – Amaechi blasts Wike

The political supremacy rift between
Nyesom Wike, the Supervising
Education Minister and Governor
Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State got
more messy yesterday when Amaechi
said Wike is grossly incompetent to be
minster for education, saying the Wike
not fit to be an Education minister,
talkless of his being his successor as
Governor of Rivers State.
The Governor spoke yesterday a
thanksgiving service for Senator
Magnus Abe, at Bera, in Gokhana
Local Government Area. “Wike is not
fit to be the minister of education.
How do you make a man who cannot
speak English the minister of
education? How can Wike convince
professors in the university on any
issue when he can’t speak proper
English?
“My Commissioner for Information,
(Mrs Ibim Semenitari), speaks better
English than Wike. And I am sure
most of you know that she speaks
English better than Wike,” he said.
Amaechi said he would ensure that
Wike did not emerge as the next
governor of Rivers. He said he
nominated Wike to be miinster despite
the availability of other more
competent people due to his desire to
nominate his kinsman, an Ikwerre.
He also blamed Wike for causing his
defection to the All Progressives
Congress due to the betrayal he
suffered at the hands of his kinsman
and his ambition.
Wike in response said the intellectual
capacity of Governor Amaechi was
doubtful.

WIKE IS A BLATANT LIAR- RIVERS GOVT!

NIGERIA: Chief Press Secretary to the Rivers State Governor, Mr. David Iyofor has described as completely false and misleading the comments made by the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, on Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Rivers monorail.

He said the Supervising Minister of Education distorted facts and lied when he spoke in a Monday morning Channels television interview.

Iyofor addressed the press after taking journalists on a facility tour of the Rivers State monorail project along Azikiwe road, Port Harcourt, on Monday.

He said contrary to Wike’s claim that nothing was happening at the Rivers monorail, work was going on even at the time he spoke to journalists at the project site. The site engineer also spoke to the journalists.

Iyofor said: “Gentlemen of the press, as you can see work is ongoing at the monorail project, so it’s funny when we hear the supervising minister for education, Nyesom Wike say that work is not going on. I mean, today is Monday, February 3, 2014 and this morning you all heard him on TV saying there is no work going on the monorail.

He was asked pointedly, he said, no, nothing is happening on the monorail project, he said no work is going on at the Rivers Monorail project but I’m glad you all are here today and you can see that work is going on in the monorail and as you heard the site engineer say, they even work day and night so that they could meet the target for completion and the monorail is already like 85 per cent completed according to him, so it’s even funny if a minister that is supposed to be an honourable minister of the Federal Republic (of Nigeria) could come on national TV to lie and attempt to deceive Nigerians.”

“It’s something that all can see, I mean anybody that drives through Azikiwe road could see that work is ongoing, work has been ongoing on this project and is ongoing on the project, and Wike can come on national TV and lie pointedly that nothing is happening at the Rivers monorail, so you can only imagine what else he has lied about, if he can lie on something that we all can see with our two eyes that work is actually going on, and a minister that is supposed to be an honourable person come on national TV to say nothing is happening at the Rivers Monorail.

“It’s unfortunate. I just feel really sad and I feel pity for him that he could come up to lie about a project where work is going on.

“This was the project he was part of, he was a member of the Rivers State Cabinet when this project started and he could come to criticize and attack that same project. It’s really unfortunate and really sad, so I urge Nigerians to completely disregard whatever he said. If he can lie about something we all can see, so we can imagine how many lies he told in that interview this morning on TV”.

Iyofor described as outrageous and a wicked lie the claims by Wike that the new schools that the Governor has built all over the State are only in Port Harcourt city.

Iyofor also refuted Wike’s claim that Governor Amaechi did not make him Minister in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, recalling that Governor Amaechi pleaded with President Jonathan for Wike to be accepted as a ministerial nominee.

“The bottom line is that Governor Amaechi nominated him (Wike) to be a minister. Wike said his name was number 2 or number 3 or the ministerial list sent to the President by the governor. So what does he want? For the governor to put number one, Nyesom Wike, number two, Nyesom Wike, number three, Nyesom Wike, number four, Nyesom Wike? Like the governor said at the Ogbakor Ikwerre Convention that the president clearly refused, that he did not know Wike, the governor said at the Ogbakor Ikwerre convention and Sampson Agbaru was at that meeting with the president when the president said he did not know Nyesom Wike from Adam and he refused to make him a Minister but Governor Amaechi had to beg and beg and beg for Wike to be made a minister, so how else does a man make somebody a minister?”

He said it was sad that the Supervising Minister of Education lied about his former boss (Amaechi) and criticized the monorail project which was initiated during the time Wike was Chief of Staff in Government House, Port Harcourt.
He accused the former Chief of Staff of being ungrateful to Governor Amaechi whom he severally described as his benefactor.
Also speaking to journalists on the monorail project, the site engineer, Mr. Dele Mateola, who was at the project site at the time of the interview said, work was in progress and nearing completion.
He said the Azikiwe station of the monorail was 85 per cent completed, stressing that his men work day and night to meet the target date.

He said: “Actually, with the level we are going now, especially on Azikiwe station we have gone up to 85 per cent completion and we are expecting by maybe ending of February we should be rounding up especially for the external works. Maybe, by the time you come here in the next two weeks we will have put asphalt on the road and that is to show that we are working seriously.

“Look around, you see that there are a lot of workers working, a lot of noise around here, that is to show that we are moving very fast according to the programme of work. The only thing that can delay us, because most of these materials that we are using, they are state-of –the –art materials and they are not something that is readily available, they have to be imported and that is the only time lag that we may have. So before the end of February, if those materials come in we should be saying bye bye. We even work in the night also to make sure that we meet up”, Mateola said.

With all the enormous wealth of Rivers state, so there is no single standard hospital in the state!! This is pathetic.

The Police also claim no permit was obtained before the rally! While we sympathise with Amaechi on his travails, once again, Nigeria belongs to NOBODY!! Please clarify whether you obtain a permit for the rally or not.

A Rivers State senator who was reportedly shot with a rubber bullet and teargas cannisters earlier today by the Nigerian police in the state is on his way to London for further treatment according to sources in the state.

Senator Magnus Abe was hospitalized earlier today when policemen disrupting a peaceful rally organized by the opposition members in state shot at him with teargas and rubber bullets.

His doctor claimed that the senator’s chest was hit with an object that might have caused internal bleeding therefore necessitating his transfer to the UK for better medical care.

The police in the state however deny that its members shot the Senator, they instead that minimum force was applied in dispersing rally goers at the state’s College of Arts and Sciences because they did not obtain police permit before the gathering

The group, led by Evans Bipi, was sneaked into the building by police officers and are believed to have commenced a meeting to impeach the governor.

UPDATE 1

The six members of the Rivers state House of Assembly opposed to Governor Rotimi Amaechi are planning to hold a plenary today to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor, people familiar with the matter have told PREMIUM TIMES.

The faction, which enjoys the backing of President Goodluck Jonathan and his wife, Patience, is currently strategizing on how to discreetly access the sealed Assembly complex to hold its sitting, our sources said.

The sources said the police in the state have agreed to provide cover for the lawmakers to hold their sitting.

The spokesperson for the Rivers Police Command, Ahmad Muhammad, wouldn’t confirm or deny the allegation.

“I’m in Lagos at this time, and do not know what is happening in Rivers,” he told PREMIUM TIMES on telephone

The leader of the group of six lawmakers, Evan Bipi, confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES his group would meet today.

“Yes, we are going to meet today at the Assembly complex,” he said in a telephone interview. “The police are asking for the court judgment before they will allow us sit but I’m currently talking to them. In a little while, lets say 10 a.m., we will proceed to the Assembly.”

Mr. Evan did not say what his group would discuss at its sitting.

He however insisted that it was only his group that deserved access to the Assembly complex to hold meetings.

“I took them to court and won so why should they try to sit there. That was why the police stopped them. But the police will allow us to sit.”

But the deputy speaker of the Assembly, Leyii Kwani, told PREMIUM TIMES Friday morning that his group would resist any attempt by the police to allow the Evan Bipi-led group to sit.

“We will not fold our arms and allow them to commit illegality,” Mr. Kwani said on the telephone. “We will repeat what we did yesterday by trying to sit too. If the police do not allow us to enter the Assembly, we will sit outside. If that does not work, we will move elsewhere to continue our sitting.”

The police had on Thursday disrupted a sitting of the 26 lawmakers loyal to Mr. Amaechi.

The lawmakers, led by Mr. Kwani, had converged on the Assembly to sit in compliance with a high court order barring the National Assembly from taking over the functions of the Assembly.

But as the lawmakers tried to gain entry, the police quickly descended on the Assembly and sealed off the complex.

The lawmakers then decided to hold their sitting outside the complex.

But the police suddenly began shooting teargas and live ammunition at the lawmakers who quickly took to their heels scampering for safety.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES after the incident, the state Commissioner of Information, Ibim Semenitari said, “It is an indication of the impunity ravaging the country and a clear indication that the PDP under the present leadership has lost all forms of democratic conduct.

They can’t even pretend to wear a mien of civility rather they are practising jackboot governance and repression worse than we have ever seen under the military.”

ANOTHER GOVERNOR OPTS OUT OF APC!!

It is indeed the season of anomie and abject contradictions!!

The Governor of Niger State, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu and the Governor of Jigawa State, Dr. Sule Lamido have broken ties with the group of aggrieved State Governors in the PDP known as the G7 and have not defected to the All Progressive Party (APC), THEWILL can authoritatively report.

Recall that the G7 and the splinter new PDP Tuesday merged with the APC.

UPDATE:
Speaking with THEWILL in a conference call after the APC/new PDP merger was announced, the Chief Press Secretary to the Niger State Governor, Mr. Danladi Ndayebo, distanced Dr. Aliyu from the merger saying he remains in the PDP.

Even though Dr. Aliyu was at the meeting where the merger was finalized, his spokesman said their talks were inconclusive and that the governor was shocked at the merger announcement.

“My principal remains in the PDP. He has not left the party, he is not a part of the merger…” Mr. Ndayebo said.

Also, a source familiar with the merger talks told THEWILL that Governor Sule Lamido wont be leaving the PDP at least for now as “he is finding it difficult to leave.”

The source who asked not to be named in this report described Lamido “as a strong party man and one of the founders of the PDP.”

Reports reaching DailyPost show that former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Tonye Harry is dead.

Tonye Harry is a strong ally of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and also a serving member of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Information available to DailyPost indicates that the member representing Degema Constituency in the State legislature suffered heart seizure on-board a France bound plane from Algeria.

Recall that Harry collapsed at his residence while exercising earlier this week and the Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Dr Sampson Parkar confirmed that he was to be flown abroad for further treatment.
