UEFA Changes Champions League Seedings!

The odds of an english side winning the Champions League next season drifted somewhat with the announcement by UEFA about their new regulations.

The top three finishers of the English Premier League, joined potentially by the fourth placed team (who has to go to a play-off round to make the group stage) will be in action next season. At the time of writing that would be Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City.

However, the Premier League will now have only one top-seeded side in next season’s competition because of the new regulations. For the 2015/16 Champions League, there will be only eight seeded teams and they will be the winners from Europe’s top seven leagues and the current competition’s holders.

The rule changes are intended to make the group stage a bit more interesting, by raising the potential of more of Europe’s major clubs meeting each other.Previously teams were seeded by Uefa’s rankings, based on results in Europe.

So the new rules mean, that only the Premier League winners from this season (most likely Chelsea) will be among next season’s top UEFA Champions League seeds.

No English side of course, made it to the quarter final stage this season, with Chelsea and Arsenal both being seeded for this season’s draw.
