Lagos Hospital Starts Free Health Checks For All

When last did you check your blood pressure and blood sugar level? When people collapse suddenly and pass off it is due to uncontrolled high blood pressure and not the innocent old woman in your family! Watershed Hospital, Isolo has kicked off another round of its popular free health care medical programme. The programme which opens opportunity for people in in Lagos State is aimed at enhancing better healthcare delivery to the people.

At the flag off weekend, the Medical Director, Dr. Uche Ezeani said it was meant to provide service at no cost and to sensitise the people on the need to take their general health serious.

The programme which runs till March 27 is tagged: "Quality and Affordable Healthcare, The Right of the People".

Ezeani said the health week covers all areas of healthcare, from health talks, testing and free treatment.

"While the programme lasts a week, there will be blood pressure and temperature checks and urinalysis to screen for silent killers of high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus.

The programme kicked off with health talks on health seeking behaviour pattern in Nigeria and life style management. This was followed on Saturday by antenatal clinic and talks with pregnant women on reducing maternal morbility/mortality and cancers in women and talks on fighting the scourge of blindness and free eye checks.

"Monday focused on infertility, free blood group checks and free HIV screening while the next day (today) is for marriage counselling for young couples, family planning, school health and free de-worming of children under 10 along with free scan.

On Wednesday the challenges of teenage life, sex education, the biological drives and unwanted pregnancies. will be discussed. Thursday, 26th will centre on problem of the elderly and stress and mental health while the last day is for overview of environmental health.
