King of Fuji music, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as K1, on Tuesday turned 58. To celebrate this feat, Marshal, we were informed, is planning to celebrate in Dubai, the United Arab Emirate with a few friends and family any time soon. Born Wasiu Adewale Ayinde Omogbolahan Anifowoshe on March 3, 1957 in Agarawu, Lagos-Island, Lagos State, young Wasiu began his music career soon after his dad died. This was when he was just 13 years old.

He released his first album in 1980. In 1984, he released his evergreen album: Talazo 84. It featured a new tempo and dynamic beat that was instantly dubbed the Talazo system. The album became an instant hit and the Fuji music world has never been the same again. The impact of that album transformed Marshal into a national icon. And within a few years, he had incorporated the western elements into the music. These included keyboard, saxophone and guitar. Among his several awards are Fame Musician of the Year, Best Fuji Artiste by Nigerian Music Award and Best African Artiste in WOMAD in Reading, United Kingdom in 1996. In 1994, K1 was crowned the King of Fuji music and was re-named King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal First.
