Ambode, Agbaje Sign Peace Accord!

To ensure a violence-free election in the state, the two leading governorship candidates in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have signed a peace accord to ensure peace during and after the April 11 governorship election.



The peace accord was signed on Monday at the official residence of Jeffrey Hawkins, the United States Consul-General in Lagos and witnessed by the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, James F. Entwistle, as well as some Nigerian religious leaders.

After reading the content of the peace deal to the gathering, it was signed by the two candidates, Agbaje and Ambode, as well as Ambassador James Entwistle.

Other signatories were Archbishop Alfred Adewale Martins, the Catholic Archbishop of Lagos, Imam Abdulrahman Ahmad, National Missioner of Ansar-ud-Deen Society of Nigeria, Pastor Paul Adefarasin, Senior Pastor and Prelate of House on the Rock, and Sheikh Abdurrahman Adangba, National Missioner of Fatil-ul-Qareeb Islamic Society.

The religious leaders appealed to both candidates to eschew violence and embrace peace no matter the outcome of the election, advising that they could seek redress in case of any infringement through legal channels.

The religious leaders also urged them to call on their supporters to embrace peace and not violence.

Giving reasons on why only two candidates were invited, Entwistle said the signing ceremony was symbolic, adding that it was important to focus on what was being done rather than what ought to have been done to ensure hitch-free polls.
