'Stooge wife': Naima Makda with boyfriend Ibrahim Mahter
The ringleader of a sham marriage gang used his own girlfriend as a ‘stooge wife’, marrying her to strangers for £8,000.
Ibrahim Mahter, 29, organised a string of lucrative fake ceremonies and ‘pressured’ women to take part.
His girlfriend, Naima Makda, 28, was one of several bogus brides who would marry foreign nationals for £8,000 a time so that they could stay in the UK.
Mahter, along with Abdulgani Makrani, 66, paid the women to marry strangers from Pakistan and India, a court heard.
Both men, along with Makda and two other fake brides were jailed on Monday after a judge said they had shown ‘total disrespect for the institution of marriage and UK immigration laws’.
Judge Robert Brown told the gang, which also included stooge wives Kubrah Saiyed, 27, and Nimesha Gosai, 30, that only a custodial sentence was appropriate. Gary Short, prosecuting, told Leicester Crown Court that Makda was ‘more than just a stooge wife’ because she chaperoned other bogus brides.
During the trial last month, the jury heard how Mahter was the main driving force behind the gang. The five defendants, all from Leicester, were charged with conspiracy to facilitate a breach of UK immigration law between 2005 and 2012.
The bogus ceremonies took place in Leicester, Belfast and Llandudno in North Wales.
Mahter, a security guard, was jailed for four years and Makrani for three-and-a-half years.
Saiyed and Makda were both jailed for two-and-a-half years. Gosai, who pleaded guilty, was jailed for 14 months.
