Amb Gbenga Ashiru's Miraculous Last Hour!

To paraphrase the words of famous Nigerian writer, Ben Okri, in one of his books, The Famished Road, many things happen among the living that only the dead can explain and vice versa.

This description aptly comes into reference, particularly when one considers the circumstances surrounding the death of the ex-Foreign Affairs Minister, Ambassador Gbenga Ashiru.

Before the full glare of the sympathetic congregation during a service of songs at the All Souls Anglican Church, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, the late diplomat’s son, Gbenga Ashiru Jnr., recounted, during his vote of thanks, his last moments with his father who was on sickbed.

He revealed that his father had “died” before he eventually passed on. He said during the period, his dutiful wife, Kehinde, who is a medical doctor, had alerted the foreign medical personnel who came in and pronounced him dead after carrying out a thorough check on him.

He, however, said that shortly after the doctors had pronounced him dead, he miraculously came alive to the chagrin of all. Instantly, his wife and family were greatly relieved and thankful, believing the worst was over and that he had been given another lease of life.

At that point, the late diplomat, according to a source, began to give certain instructions to his sons about certain things he wanted them to do. The doctors were baffled and kept asking his family what they did to bring him back to life. Everyone said it was nothing but God’s divine intervention, especially as he was coherent and quite alert.

But typical of joy that has a slender body, a few hours after, he was said to have closed his eyes and slipped into eternity the same day.

At the service of songs, many poured encomiums on the late minister, while his long-time colleagues in the diplomatic corps described him as a problem solver, a bridge builder and a compassionate individual.

The late Ashiru died in a South African hospital on November 29, after a protracted battle with brain tumor.
