But this shouldn't come as a surprise. FIFA has barred players from wearing non-Sony headphones inside stadiums and even forced Brazilian lawmakers to impose a bill allowing the sale of beer inside stadiums, despite previously-established laws.
According to the report, part of Neymar's Speedo undergarments were exposed during the customary post-match procedure of exchanging jerseys with an opposing player. The issue is that Speedo is not a World Cup-sanctioned line of clothing.
What FIFA is investigating is whether or not Neymar purposefully exposed his Speedo briefs as a marketing ploy. As ridiculous as it sounds, it does have precedence. At the 2012 European Championships, Denmark's Nicklas Bendtner was fined over $125,000 by UEFA for revealing the name of a betting firm on the waistband on his undergarments during a goal celebration.
In fact, this isn't even the first time Neymar has been linked to a situation like this. In April, during a Champions League macth between Atletico Madrid and his Barcelona side, he exposed the waistband of his briefs five times, calling attention to the Lupo brand of undergarments he was wearing. The company then turned that into publicity and Neymar's management team had to dispell the notions that he colluded to help market the product for Lupo.
FIFA hasn't been a fan favorite as of late, ecspecially after it was slammed for its lack of moral compass — the entire 2022 World Cup bidding process, not to mention refusing to ban a popular chant at the current World Cup that has clear homophobic connotation.
FIFA does care, folks.
They just care about all the wrong things.
