There were speeches by a Member of Parliament and several dignitaries. The high point of the occasion was the speech delivered extempore by the Special Adviser on Political Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr Ahmed Gulak. The highlights of his speech are as follows:
He berated the Western countries for their penchant for arming and supplying weapons to insurgents in Africa. That this is the singular reason fanning the embers of insurgency in Africa and Nigeria in general.
That the President is not a sit tight President.
That Nigeria must practice democracy as enshrined in the 1979 constitution.
He berated the doctrine of necessity when the provisions of the constitution are quite clear on the issue.
That all Nigerians are entitled to contest for any post in the land.
That President Goodluck Jonathan is constitutional empowered and enabled to contest the 2015 presidential elections.
That any suggestion to the contrary is misleading.
That great progress has been made in all spectra though not perfect.
He elicited the support of all and sundry towards the attainment of a greater Nigeria.
He also reminded all that President Jonathan has been able to take off the streets about 10,200 children in the North, roaming without education.
The event was well organised and attended. Kudos to Maureen Bond.
