Former Federal Information Commissioner, Chief Edwin Clark led presentations to Jonathan against Dokpesi. Clark on behalf of Niger Delta leaders threatened Jonathan with descent should he go ahead with the appointment.
Furthermore, the Niger Delta leaders accused Dokpesi of promoting the interest of former military President Ibrahim Babangida. Their argument was that IBB working in concert with Obasanjo are bent on destroying Jonathan’s second term chances.
The insistence of Jonathan to appoint Dokpesi led to the open revolt through a press interview by Clark that called to question Dokpesi’s integrity and capacity to perform as Chief of Staff.
Clark’s recourse to public fight convinced the President that appointing Dokpesi could be couunter-productive. Ahead of 2015 election, Presidential aides told the President that Clark’s support remains more critical than Dokpesi’s appointment.
It was also learnt that Dokpesi’s reaction to Clark also failed him. He conscripted APC’s Kassim Afegbua who worked with IBB and is presently working with Oshiomhole to do his hatchet job. This provided another weapon to his opponents.
President Jonathan has taken a middle course, appointing a former military officer from Ondo State as his Chief of Staff. Jones Oladeinde Arogbofa was born in 1952 and is an Electrical Engineer.
However, Presidency officials are shopping for an appropriate and less contention appointment for Dokpesi.
