“Wahala dey” is a popular slogan to indicate that there is “katakata” (trouble in town). The very respectable Eko Club on Sunday 2nd February, 2014 witnessed a disgraceful episode of heckling, use of expletives and generally rancorous behaviour by many junior members directed at the foundation members, Trustees and elders of the club. Trouble had been brewing since the coterie of most senior members proposed, in their own good judgement, to make the process of electing Presidents and Vice Presidents of the club a less cumbersome mode by instituting the utilisation of a guardian council made up of the 24 most senior members of the club, selected from an exponential list of 100 members, to form an electoral college to select a President for the club and put to a stop to the unsavoury divisions emanating from actual elections.
This is in line with the age-old practice in the Yoruba Tennis Club where it is explicitly within the purview of the Trustees to select the Chairman and Vice Chairman for the club. It was indeed proposed that the recommendation apropos this proposal be inserted into the constitution of the club. Consequently, a Constitution Drafting Committee was empanelled to give effect to this recommendation. However, problems reared an ugly head when Trustee, past President and foundation member, Fatai Dawodu disagreed with his fellow senior members and commenced overt interjection and incitement of the junior members against his fellow coterie. He has since been copiously visited upon by the Disciplinary Committee of the club and is not allowed within the portals of the club sine die.
The club elders, President Lawal and other members numbering over 200 had gathered in the club’s hall on Sunday to approve the proposed constitutional amendments when some junior members started their show of shame and turned the meeting into a near riotous situation. Some had shouted “down with the elders!” “Let us deal with the elders” and other vile and contemptible pronouncements. Some of these junior members had gone, with the connivance of suspended Trustee Dawodu, to make up and sign a list of 61 names in strident opposition to the wishes of the elders of the club. It was no surprise then that when the proposal had been successfully handled by the elders, a decision by this highest organ of the club, the Extraordinary General Meeting, was taken to suspend the intransigent and unruly junior members.
The presence of many past Presidents and highly placed members of the club including ex Inspector General of Police, Musiliu Smith, Trustees and past President, Chief Alaba Williams, Mutiu Gbenro, Alhaji M. M. Asorobi, Senator Muniru Muse, Shakiru Anjorin, Prince Rabiu Oluwa, Labi Lawal, Professor Abisogun Leigh and very many others, was not able to diffuse the situation. Members were seen huddled in groups discussing the event that transpired and comparing it to the show of shame at the Waka Club where some young members, again led by an irresponsible motley group of some old albeit new members attempted to force a decision and elect a Caretaker Committee for the club at the December Annual General Meeting of the club. Those misfits were vigorously rebuffed by the Chairman of Waka Club’s Board of Trustees who tore into them like a hot knife through butter.
