BADIA EAST COMMUNITYHUNDREDS OF FAMILY HOMES DESTROYED
On 23 February 2013, 2237 households in Badia East, Lagos State, were made destitute when their homes were demolished by the authorities. They haven’t received any compensation or been offered new homes. Many are still living in makeshift shelters.
Your Excellency, Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola
The families were evicted by Lagos state government officials, supported by the police. The police told them: “If you love your life, move out!” Residents watched as their homes were bulldozed and were prevented from taking their belongings.
A month later, police returned to harass the now homeless families and chased them away from their camp. They also arrested five people who were building an emergency water tank. The five were later released.
Badia East is one of many communities across Nigeria that have been torn apart by forced evictions in recent years. Many more live with the daily threat that their home will be destroyed.
