Residents of Kithenge village in
Igembe South Sub-County in Meru
are baffled after their neighbour’s
dog allegedly gave birth to a
rabbit.
Mr Josphat Kairithia the owner of
this dog claims the dog gave birth
to a rabbit on Tuesday November
26, 2013.
The dog has been taking care of
the young rabbit and even
prevents people from touching it.
People in the entire village are yet
to come to terms with this ‘rare
occurrence’.
Kairithia said that the dog had
been giving birth before but to
normal puppies and that this time
round it ‘gave birth to only one
rabbit’, something he does not
understand.
He further said that his neighbours
thought that the young one would
later change to a normal dog but
the surprising thing was that it
kept bringing out more
characteristics of a rabbit rather
than those of a dog.
“I am greatly shocked by this
incidence since I have never seen
such a thing in my life time.
MYSTERY
The dog has been giving birth to
normal puppies but this being the
third time, it gave birth to a rabbit
a mystery which is yet to be
unravelled,” claims Kairithia.
However, Mr Kairithia said that
this might have been God’s plan to
show the people that everything
was possible.
He further indicated that it was
common knowledge that dogs
usually prey on rabbits but this
one behaved differently with the
young rabbit.
The dog has been taking good care
of the rabbit as well as cuddling it.
People who want to have a view of
the rare happening have to ask
Kairthia for help as the dog would
pounce on them as it seeks to
protect ‘its young one’.
He also said that the incident
might have been a message from
God asking people to love and take
care of others even if they were
enemies.
“I cannot speculate about this
since I know that God works in
many ways.
Probably he wants to send a
message to his people that they
should love and take good care of
those whom they term as enemies
and co-exist peacefully,” he said.
He ruled out a possibility of an evil
spirit having been sent to him
through the dog.
Mr Kairithia has been receiving
visitors on a daily basis curious to
witness the rare incident.
Scientists have, however, always
insisted that normally, an animal
cannot give birth to another
animal of a different species due to
genetic differences.
