The government of The Gambia has announced the country´s immediate withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Nations, which is a remnant of the British Empire´s colonialist past.

The Gambian government stressed, that the decision to withdraw from the Commonwealth with immediate effect was made, “because the organization represents an extension of colonialism”. A Gambian government executive announced about the immediate withdrawal that:

“The government has withdrawn its membership of the British Commonwealth and decided that the Gambia will never be a member of any neo-colonial institution and will never be a party to any institution that represents an extension of colonialism”.

The Commonwealth consists of 50 nations, most of which are former colonies of the British Empire. The Commonwealth has been criticized, extensively, for maintaining the functions of the colonialist era through networks, including Freemasonry, business contacts, British corporate ownership in strategic economies, interference in domestic affairs, regime change on the basis of purported human rights concerns, and many other problems under the umbrella of contemporary or modo-colonialism.

The specific reasons for the immediate withdrawal of The Gambia from the Commonwealth have not been made public. An official at The Gambia´s Ministry of Foreign Affairs however, stated that the decision was caused by a disagreement between the Commonwealth and the government of The Gambia.

The Foreign Ministry stated, that the disagreement was related to a proposal, made by a human rights organization in 2012, pertaining the creation of a commission on human rights, communication rights and corruption in Banjul. The Gambia is the smallest country on the African continent and has been governed by Yahya Jammeh since 1994.

The United Kingdom has a reputation for using purported human rights concerns as a pretext for interfering in the domestic affairs of sovereign nations and for having brought about military interventions and regime change on the basis of purported human rights concerns.
