Police: Man threatened to kill mother for ‘poisoning’ him with pork
An Elk County man was arrested last week after police said he threatened to kill his mother and her boyfriend because he thought they served him pork for dinner.
Joshua Lee Coffey, 25, allegedly brandished a 10-inch kitchen knife the evening of June 11 and told his mother Sherri Coffey he’d “f–king kill her” after she cooked him what he thought was pork, a forbidden food under Coffey’s Muslim religion.
Officers with the City of St. Marys Police Department responded shortly before 10 p.m. to a home on the 1200 block of East Eschbach Road for a report of a domestic altercation, according to an affidavit of probable cause.
Using their spotlights, they found two men in the backyard – later identified as Joshua Lee Coffey and his mother’s boyfriend, Mark Blair.
An officer said he saw a kitchen knife in Coffey’s hand, ordered him to drop the weapon and took the young man into custody without incident.
Further investigation allegedly revealed Mark and Sherri were eating a steak dinner in the home’s upstairs bedroom when Joshua burst into the room, “accusing Sherri of attempting to poison him,” the affidavit states. “Joshua claimed the meat he was given to eat was pork, which was against his Muslim religion.”
