Man goes in for routine nose job, ends up with no nose at all

Vishal Thakkar went in for a routine nose job — a pick-me-up after his divorce — in 2006. Now the Tulsa, Okla., resident has no nose at all and breathes through a straw. Thakkar says he had trouble breathing after his first rhinoplasty, so he went back to Dr. Angelo Cuzalina to have it fixed. But the problems persisted, as did the surgical procedures — 22 of them in all.

The biggest trauma came in 2011, when Thakkar woke from surgery to discover his nose had been removed altogether. The doctor told him he'd discovered an infection "and since I was … unconscious he had to make the decision," Thakkar says. He plans to have another surgeon fix what's left of his nose!
