Boris Johnson said the new buses, styled on the old Routemasters which allow users to hop-on and off, will “save so much on fuel” they may be cheaper than existing hybrid buses.
The current hybrids cost about £300,000 each, compared to £354,000 for the new buses, meaning the savings on fuel each year are set to be substantial.
Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Mr Johnson said: “If the new bus fulfils the promise it has shown in tests, we will be able to save so much on fuel that it will actually come out cheaper than our current hybrid buses.”
He added 600 of the buses will be on London’s streets by 2016, helping to improve air quality in the capital.
