Tragedy struck at Umudagu Ihitte Mbieri in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State on Thursday evening as a huge ancestral tree, said to be over 300 years old, was uprooted by a heavy windstorm and fell, killing 50 persons and injuring four critically.
Remains of the dead persons, mainly women, were that same night deposited at the Aladimma Hospital and Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri morgues while the injured were rushed to the FMC for medical attention.
Also, the fallen tree, known as ‘Uko Tree’, is believed to belong to the community’s deity. It damaged part of the Umudagu Community Hall, which is sited around the scene, leaving several families in sorrow.
The incident occurred following a heavy downpour that was accompanied by a windstorm, which caused the aged tree to collapse from its root and wreck serious havoc in the neighbourhood.
Special Adviser to Gov. Okorocha on Media, Mr. Ebere Uzoukwa described the incident as unfortunate and tragic, pointing out that the state government immediately mobilised the rescue agencies to the scene that night.
